Regulatory framework

The emergence of a potential new energy source in the UK through the discovery of significant gas resources in northern England has caused much speculation in the press about the benefits to the UK and strong feelings amongst those opposed to any expansion of the existing onshore oil & gas industry.  These conflicting messages have understandably resulted in a degree of unease and uncertainty in the general public. To address these concerns, the Government, through the Department of Energy and Climate Change (now the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, BEIS) has produced various documents to provide information to help the public in reaching a fact-based understanding of this important issue and to reassure them as to the world-leading nature of the regulatory regime under which the industry operates.
